SAN JOSE, CA, November 18, 2024 – HomeFirst’s Board of Directors today announced the selection of René Ramirez as the homeless service agency’s next Chief Executive Officer. Ramirez has worked for HomeFirst since 2015, most recently serving as interim CEO and Chief Operating Officer where he oversaw the agency’s Human Resources, Talent Development, Facilities, Property Management, Quality Control, Compliance, and DEI departments for almost ten years. Ramirez selection was unanimously approved by the HomeFirst Board of Directors and is effective immediately.

Ramirez has nearly 30 years of experience directing effective, high-quality services and programs for individuals and families affected by homelessness and poverty. In his new role, he will be responsible for implementing the agency’s mission in Santa Clara and Sonoma counties, which provides critical homeless shelter and services to thousands of individuals and families annually.

“René brings a unique combination to the role of CEO – genuine compassion for those we serve and a keen focus on achieving measurable outcomes,” said Sri Venkat, Board Chair, HomeFirst Board of Directors. “His appointment will ensure a seamless transition and expand the agency’s ability to enhance the impact of its programs and services, further an inclusive and innovative work culture, and expand partnerships to address the complex challenges of homelessness in our community.”

"I am incredibly grateful to be chosen as HomeFirst's CEO and deeply honored to continue serving the community I grew up in. It’s a privilege to work alongside an amazing team committed to supporting our most vulnerable neighbors—our unhoused and housing-insecure residents. I look forward to forging partnerships with those dedicated to tackling the homelessness crisis that has impacted so many across the Bay Area.”

Ramirez's selection follows a four-month national search for a new CEO led by Bridge Partners, LLC out of their Boston and San Francisco offices. Ramirez's leadership and expertise is exemplified in his work with the board and staff on agency-wide strategic planning and time serving as the organization’s COO. Prior to joining HomeFirst, Ramirez served as Director of Programs for the Alum Rock Counseling Center, where he led the development and implementation of the agency's children and family services at two office sites and more than 50 schools. He also served as Vice President of the Silicon Valley Education Foundation (SVEF) where he was responsible for building and launching early education and STEM programs. Ramirez holds a BA in Psychology from San Jose State University.
