Michael became homeless in 2020 following the closure of his collectibles business. He had been selling coins, jewelry, sci-fi memorabilia, and vintage items from the 80s, but the pandemic hit his business hard. Demand for his products dissipated, and the fairs where he used to be a vendor were canceled. Michael had no family that he could fall back on, so he was forced to live in his car.

While homeless, Michael contracted COVID-19, which led to an extended hospital stay. In the hospital, he connected with his first case manager, and with their support, he moved into a shelter following his discharge.

Over the next couple of years, Michael moved between shelters, but in April 2024, he landed at Felipe, one of HomeFirst’s interim housing sites in San Jose. There, he worked closely with his case manager to secure employment, and a couple of months ago, his efforts paid off. He was offered a job at a local cinema where he now works at the ticket podium and as an usher.

While Michael was out of work for several years, he has an impressive background. He holds two degrees, one in Economics and another in English. He is also a talented writer and has a friendly, approachable personality, great characteristics for any workplace.

For Michael, getting back to work has brought him more than a paycheck - it has provided him with structure. He used to lose track of the days, something which is common amongst people experiencing homelessness, but now, he finds purpose in his routine, and with regular shifts to keep him grounded, this no longer happens.

Things have continued to look up. Shortly after securing his job, Michael got news that he would receive permanent housing. In late November 2024, paperwork was finalized, and he made the move. Michael’s experience with HomeFirst shows just how much can be achieved in a short period. With a safe place to sleep each night, personal determination, and the support of his case manager, Michael regained employment and housing and secured a more stable future.
