San Jose has opened its first interim housing site on privately leased land, bringing 135 transitional housing units online as part of its plan to end unsheltered homelessness. Developed in under two years through a public-private partnership with philanthropist John Sobrato, the Via del Oro site offers wraparound services, food, and facilities for residents previously living in nearby encampments. This scalable, cost-effective model supports Mayor Matt Mahan’s goal to make San Jose a state and national leader in homelessness solutions. With half the units already full, the city is prioritizing local unhoused individuals and enforcing no-encampment zones around the site.
